George Floyd’s National Mourning
On May 25, George Floyd, a Africa American in Minneapolis, was suffocated to death by a white police officer who pressed his neck to death. Protests in the United States have spread from Minneapolis, Minnesota to 20 states. Peaceful protests eventually turned in
to riots. Cities across the country, from New York to Chicago to Los Angeles, are now undergoing turbulent looting.
The unrest has cast another shadow over the reopening of the U.S. and the economy. It has a greater impact on daily and weekly indicators of consumer confidence, which have been showing a slight uptick since mid-April, but they may show a pullback in early June.
The road to reopening has been bumpy.
